The Story of CKC Fitness System

David Luedeka


"Necessity is the mother of invention"

CKC Fitness System began in the early 2000s. At that time, Dr. David Luedeka was managing his own physical therapy clinic in Sarasota, Florida. When not in the clinic, Dr. Luedeka spent much of his time reading the current literature within the field of PT. He discovered that many studies revealed that the efficacy of PT practice was dissatisfactory. From rotator cuff disease to lower back pain, patellar tendonitis to ACL tears, it seemed that all therapy had to offer was a short-term fix. Dr. Luedeka asked himself, “What is treatment missing?”


Dr. Luedeka had always been fascinated by evolutionary anatomy. He became particularly interested in evolutionary mismatches: features of the human body, once necessary for survival in our evolutionary past, that were now maladaptive in modern-day society. The first theory Dr. Luedeka developed was the "Rotator Cuff Mismatch Theory". His research showed that although chimps and Homo sapiens had virtually identical shoulder anatomy, rotator cuff disease was nearly nonexistent within chimps. Seven out of ten humans, on the other hand, experience rotator cuff dysfunction at some point in their lives. Why the difference? Dr. Luedeka realized that because chimps function on all fours, external forces (gravity and ground reaction force) assist in stabilizing the shoulder joint. Homo sapiens, however, lack that stability and often overwork the vulnerable rotator cuff tissue. Soon thereafter, Dr. Luedeka began to understand the value of closed chain exercise.


Closed kinetic chain exercise takes place with either the upper or lower extremity fixed on an immovable object. Closed chain exercise is safe, effective, and functional. Many patients lack the proper strength and form to properly perform the exercises, though, so Dr. Luedeka modified the exercises to make them achievable for his patients. The initial stages were makeshift, but the development of the CKC Trainer was soon underway.

CKC Fitness System has come a long way since its early stages. Dr. Luedeka’s has put his theories to the test and is conducting his own research alongside Lori Michener, Ph.D. at USC Division of Biokinesiology and Physical Therapy on the rotator cuff evolutionary mismatch. The study is testing the effectiveness of closed kinetic chain exercise for those with full thickness rotator cuff tears. The results show strong clinical significance and publishing is in progress.

CKC Fitness offers services in Sarasota, FL at The Renewal Point. Dr. Luedeka has expanded CKC Fitness System to various locations around the United States. Through his knowledge and expertise, he has helped many patients overcome injuries and return to an active life. Many consider him an innovator in the field of physical therapy and strength training due to his “outside the box” thinking when treating patients and training clients.

Closed Kinetic Chain (CKC) Exercise

Closed kinetic chain exercise takes place with either the upper or lower extremity fixed on an immovable object. The associated muscles contract in an effort to move this object, unable to move the object, the muscular contraction causes motion in the opposite direction. 

Why Train in a Closed Chain? 

This is how our lower extremities function when we move around our environment and this type of contraction is needed in the upper extremity exercise to decrease stress on the shoulder joint.
